What happens during a session at the SSC

  • Children are escorted to the SSC (Rainbow Room) by parents or taxi escorts/drivers, where they will be greeted by SSC staff.  During the session they play throughout the nursery, following their own interests and being supported in their learning.

  • Children will be taken to Rainbow Room for 10 - 15 minute sessions of individual or small group speech and language work.

  • A snack is available during the session.

  • In the last 15-20 minutes of the session, the whole group comes together for more structured learning experiences.

  • At the end of the session, children are collected from Rainbow Room by parents or taxi staff.

How we support the children in the SSC

  • When your child starts, you will be offered a home visit.  We find these visits help the child to settle and the family to build a special relationship with the SSC staff.

  • Your child’s speech and language skills will be assessed by the Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) in the first half term.

  • The SLT and Teacher in Charge will write targets for your child to work towards. These targets form a Targeted Support Plan (TSP). TSPs are reviewed and updated throughout the year.

  • Your child will receive speech and language therapy input from the SSC team, individually or in small groups, for work on TSP targets.

  • Therapy sessions are usually 10-15 minutes and take place 2-3 times a week with the SLT, and with the Teacher in Charge on days when there is no SLT in the nursery.

  • Children are supported throughout the nursery by the SSC team to enable them to transfer the skills they learn in therapy sessions.

  • Supplementary methods of communication (e.g. Makaton signing, picture support) are used to support communication

  • Visual timetables are used to enable your child to make choices and understand the daily routine.
