What happens during a session at the SSC

Children are escorted to the SSC (Rainbow Room) by parents or taxi escorts/drivers, where they will be greeted by SSC staff. During the session they play throughout the nursery, following their own interests and being supported in their learning.

Children will be taken to Rainbow Room for 10 - 15 minute sessions of individual or small group speech and language work.

A snack is available during the session.

In the last 15-20 minutes of the session, the whole group comes together for more structured learning experiences.

At the end of the session, children are collected from Rainbow Room by parents or taxi staff.
How we support the children in the SSC

When your child starts, you will be offered a home visit. We find these visits help the child to settle and the family to build a special relationship with the SSC staff.

Your child’s speech and language skills will be assessed by the Speech and Language Therapists (SLT) in the first half term.

The SLT and Teacher in Charge will write targets for your child to work towards. These targets form a Targeted Support Plan (TSP). TSPs are reviewed and updated throughout the year.

Your child will receive speech and language therapy input from the SSC team, individually or in small groups, for work on TSP targets.

Therapy sessions are usually 10-15 minutes and take place 2-3 times a week with the SLT, and with the Teacher in Charge on days when there is no SLT in the nursery.

Children are supported throughout the nursery by the SSC team to enable them to transfer the skills they learn in therapy sessions.

Supplementary methods of communication (e.g. Makaton signing, picture support) are used to support communication

Visual timetables are used to enable your child to make choices and understand the daily routine.
